LAWYERS WITHOUT BORDERS HONORS HUMAN RIGHTS VOLUNTEERS
Hartford, CT August, 2003 -- Lawyers Without Borders (LWOB) holds its first annual awards dinner on August 14, 2003 at 7:00 pm at the Omni Hotel at Yale, 155 Temple Street, New Haven, Connecticut. LWOB is a non-governmental organization based in Hartford, Connecticut with a global reach. This three year old organization has 600 members in 55 countries around the world.
LWOB connects pro bono opportunities and projects with young lawyers, seasoned lawyers and practicing lawyers. LWOB sends neutral observers to courts and detention facilities around the world. LWOB provides a resource for lawyers being persecuted or targeted for their support of human rights. Finally, LWOB provides training on a number of topics.
LWOB has established the Gold Globe Award in honor of one of its earliest supporters, the late Barry Gold of New York. The award is given to a lawyer who makes a signification contribution to LWOB while maintaining a full time private practice. The initial recipient will be Marion Williams of Toronto, Canada for her tireless representation of LWOB in Canada.
This year's awardees are: Judge Wilma VanBenthem from Zwolle, Netherlands (receiving the LWOB Fellow Award for working for LWOB on sabbatical in New York City for 18 months) and Mark Wireman of Detroit, Michigan, our IT Director and honoree of the United Nations NetAid Online Volunteer of the Year Award 2003 (receiving the LWOB Volunteer Award in absetentia for providing the Internet resources to coordinate with members wherever they are located).
