Attorneys Find Their Ability to Make Rain Critical to Success
Chicago, IL September 7, 2004 -- In 2004, the American Bar Association estimated the number of lawyers in the United States to be more than one million, roughly one attorney for every 300 people. With 30,000 new lawyers joining the job field every year, it is increasingly difficult for lawyers to advance their career or build their private practice without learning the skills of a rainmaker.
"A rainmaker is someone who is someone who knows how to make it rain. Rainmakers land the new accounts, they bring in the money, and constantly seek opportunities to up sell existing clients. Look behind every successful law firm and you will find a rainmaker. Hiring a lawyer is easy, but finding a rainmaker is the challenge facing every firm in today's competitive marketplace," says Stephen Fairley, president of Today's Leadership Coaching and Small Business Coach (http://www.TodaysLeadership.com ).
On August 17, Mr. Fairley spoke at the Career Development Meeting of the Wisconsin Bar Association, sponsored by Legalstaff.com, a leading provider of online recruiting for law firms. His presentation focused on helping lawyers discover the skills and understand the process of how to find new clients.
One of the surprising keys of highly successful attorneys, Fairley says, is that they understand they are not just selling legal services. "One of the biggest problems lawyers have in Milwaukee is that they practice in areas of law that are nearly identical from one lawyer to the next and from one law firm to the next. If you want a family lawyer there are 5,457 in Wisconsin to select from. If you're looking for an estate attorney, there are 7,114 you can interview. While it is true that a generic label helps people quickly identify the type of lawyer they need, but that same generic label also reinforces the perception that all lawyers in a specific field are the same. The problem is that people don't know how to tell the difference from one lawyer to the next. Successful lawyers sell more than legal services, they sell solutions and results."
"I am not an attorney, I'm a Small Business Coach," explains bestselling author Mr. Fairley, "I specialize in helping professional service firms rapidly increase their revenues and find new clients fast by applying the principles in my book Practice Made Perfect: 10 Principles for Marketing Your Services."
Mr. Fairley will be speaking on "Your Practice Made Perfect: 5 Keys for Rainmaking" September 14 at the Illinois State Bar Association meeting, which is also sponsored by Legalstaff.com and open to all attorney and legal professionals. To register call (800) 252-8908.
